Career Services: student success story

Shawaiz credits CIC’s Career Services for helping him to develop his career path while he studied for his Bachelor of Business (Accounting).

Shawaiz attended the Careers Office to discuss his future path, having been offered a position to be trained as a cook at TGI Friday. At the time, he was working part-time as a cook for Red Rooster. He was unsure of what to do; although he wanted to become an accountant, the offer of fulltime work did seem tempting.

Speaking with the CIC Careers Coach, Sandra, Shawaiz was able to map out a plan for his future, keeping in mind that his dream was to become an accountant. Sandra spoke to Shawaiz about the pros and cons of both jobs and helped him put together a career path. This included talking to his manager about a promotion and doing voluntary work in the accounts field.

This was some good advice, as Shawaiz spoke to his manager and was promoted to Assistant Manager, which means he now has exposure to budgets, basic accounting and managing staff. This will complement his studies, as he puts into the practice the skills he is learning in the classroom.

Shwaiz credits Sandra for assisting to clear his thinking and planning a career path.
